the Clear message

Circadian lighting is the future.

Often referred to as the "body clock", the circadian rhythm is a biological process that regulates many physiological processes, including telling our body when to sleep. Our environment—and light in particular—has a strong effect on our circadian rhythm, which in turn impacts our health. Aligning your body’s circadian rhythm with the natural environment is essential to promoting physical and mental health.

Lumen Impact’s Spectrally Enhanced Circadian Lighting ensures that the body receives the optimal spectral distribution of white light—at the right time of day, with the right intensity, and the right quality level. This creates an environment that mimics the sun’s changes in color throughout the day, leading to higher levels of health & performance.

The installation of ‘human-centric’ lighting at the office of the property company CBRE has boosted productivity by 18 per cent… Additionally, work accuracy improved by 12 per cent, 76 per cent of employees reported feeling happier and half felt healthier.

the cLear solution

Living well.

Circadian lighting is based on the science that light can be used to promote better health by minimizing the impact of electric light on sleep. Scientists have discovered that light at night, especially blue wavelength light, has a negative impact on our bodies production of melatonin which is an essential hormone for promoting sleep.

Research has now documented that Spectrally Enhanced Circadian Lighting reduces the impact and risk of:

  • Obesity and diabetes

  • Cardio-vascular disease

  • Breast and prostate cancer

  • Sleep disorders

  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Stress and smoking

  • Sepsis or cyanosis

Furthermore, recent clinical studies have demonstrated that violet–blue light, particularly 405 nm light, has significant antimicrobial properties against a wide range of bacterial and fungal pathogens and, although germicidal efficacy is lower than UV light, this limitation is offset by its facility for safe, continuous use in occupied and unoccupied environments. As a supplement to standard cleaning practices, violet-blue light is an effective anti-bacterial and anti-fungal against a wide variety of bacterial and fungal pathogens including but not limited to following:

  • Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA)

  • Clostridium perfringens (food poisoning)

    • Clostridium difficile (HAI – contagious diarrhea)

    • Staphylococcus Epidermis (skin infection)

  • Enterococcus faecalis (HAI –strain of strep)

  • Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A strep)

  • Listeria monocytogenes (food poisioning)

  • Acinetobacter baumannii (HAI - blood, UTI and lung infections

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa (HAI – blood and lung infection)

  • Proteus vulgaris (urinary tract infection)

  • Escherichia coli (food poisoning)

  • Salmonella enteritidis & typhimurium (food poisoning)

  • Shigella sonnei (bloody diarrhea)

  • Serratia marcescens (HAI – wound, uti, kidney)

  • Aspergillus niger (mold)

  • Candida albicans (yeast infection)

“There are certain wavelengths in the blue part of the spectrum that boost alertness, performance, and mood during the daytime hours, but during the nighttime hours they disrupt circadian clocks and now have been shown through hundreds of research studies to cause a 65% increase in breast cancer, a 37% increase in diabetes, a substantial increase in cardiovascular disease, an increase in prostate cancer, and a variety of medical problems.

the cleAr need

Acuity through lighting.

Human physiology and performance follow the cycle of how sunlight changes throughout the day.

Systems within the human eye and brain sense changes in the light’s spectral composition and intensity. The eye sends signals to the brain to trigger the release of serotonin (the body’s natural antidepressant) during the day and melatonin (a hormone affecting sleep) at night.

Light is the most important environmental input, after food and water, in controlling bodily functions.
— Richard Wurtman, Professor of Neuropharmacology, Emeritus, MIT

Research confirms that lighting can dramatically impact our:

  • Alertness

  • Awareness

  • Behavior

  • Creativity

  • Cognition

  • Comprehension

  • Concentration

  • Increased staff retention by 1 to 2 years

High-Benefit Lighting at the San Diego Federal Building and Courthouse, productivity improved 3% in office areas and 15% in the courthouse, prison, and Post Office spaces. With a total of 1,800 employees at an average wage (including benefits) of $24,000 per year, the 3 % productivity improvement saves the federal government $1,296,000 per year in the Federal Building alone.
